National Apprenticeship Week: Interview with Freddie Knight, Commercial Apprentice

As part of National Apprenticeship Week 2023, we sat down with Freddie Knight, who is studying for a degree in Quantity Surveying at the University of Westminster and supports his studies by working in MIDA’s Surveying and Estimating departments.
What attracted you to a career in Construction & Civil Engineering?
Few careers are as rewarding as those in the construction industry. The satisfaction of seeing your work develop in front of your eyes is one of the most fulfilling aspects of working in construction. You can watch a building transform and grow into the finished product, knowing you have made an important and lasting contribution to the landscape.
What course are you currently studying?
Chartered Surveyor Apprenticeship – Building Control Surveying BSc.
What prior studying did you do to obtain a place on your apprenticeship?
I completed a 2-year college course at Bedford College, whilst learning about civil engineering, quantity surveying and architecture.
What are the advantages of being an apprentice with MIDA?
They are a local and growing company with great opportunities to develop and progress.
What do you most enjoy about working at MIDA?
Working around a great bunch of people.
How have MIDA supported you with your learning and development?
MIDA have supported me by helping me get into university to learn the theoretical side of the job. They have also supported me by setting me various tasks to learn and get better at the practical side of the job.
Where do you see yourself in 5 years’ time and what are your future goals?
In 5 years’ time I see myself being a Chartered Surveyor. My future goal is to progress as high as possible at MIDA.
