In celebration of Women in Construction week, MIDA Civils interviewed Procurement Manager, Vicky Carr.

Vicky shares her path into the building industry, and the challenges and opportunities she has experienced in creating a more inclusive business for everyone.

Can you tell us about your career in the construction industry?

I started my career within Travis Perkins, builder’s merchant, in credit control. During that time I realised that I had a passion for building relationships with customers. I continued in the builder’s merchant industry with stints at Jewson and Keyline, working within the regional sales office and continuing to build strong relationships with construction customers.

At Keyline, MIDA Civils was one our my key customers, who I enjoyed supporting through their early stage growth. When the opportunity arose to become a MIDA Senior Buyer, I jumped at the chance. With MIDA I have continued to progress in my career, taking on additional areas of responsibility and now managing the procurement team.

What attracted you to a career in construction?

Construction has always been a big part of my life, with most of my family working in the sector. It was the ideal career pathway for me to follow and I have never looked back or regretted it.

What did you think about the building industry before joining it? Has your opinion changed at all?

Before joining the construction industry, I thought it was very much a male only space. This has started to change through my career, and it is great to see more women joining the industry as the years pass.

What are some of your favourite things about working in the industry?

The people are the best part of the industry – friendly, down to earth, and welcoming. Because of this I have made lifelong friends along the way.

What would you say to other women considering starting their career or switching careers, about a career in construction?

If you like to be busy and make a meaningful impact, then construction is the career for you. No two days are ever the same and it’s great to see the results of your hard work standing pretty and supporting lives for years to come.
